DESCRIPTION:Northern water snakes measure from 61 to 140 cm.They are active day and night. Most of the time it is gray, greenish-gray, or brown in color, with dark crossbanding. Many of them are so dark in color that their patterning is barely discernible. They have flat heads, and are fairly heavy-bodied.
HABITAT: Northern water snakes are found along the Coastal Plain of the US from southwest Alabama to North Carolina. They can be found in nearly all freshwater habitats, including ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands, swamps, and marshes.
PREY: amphibians (adults and tadpoles), fish (alive or dead), crayfish, large insects, leeches, other snakes, turtles, birds, and small mammals such as white-footed mice.
OFFSPRINGS:This species can give birth to 25 babies or more.
NEWBORNS: are 200–240 mm (about 8-9.5 in) in total length.
PREDITOR: milk snakes and racers, and by raccoons, skunks, and foxes.
FUN FACT: Northern water snakes under side has orange spots and white there.
