Scientific name: Dolomedes Triton
Description: The six spotted fishing spider is about 2 1/2 inches long including the legs. It has a greenish brown body. It usually has 12 white spots on its rear section and two white stripes on its front section. Females are larger than males.
Habitat: The six spotted fishing spider lives around small ponds with shallow quiet water. It hunts on the edge and in the water. It likes to hide in tall plants.
Diet: This spider eats insects (flies, gnats etc.) and larger prey including small fish, frogs, tadpoles, and newts.
Offspring: After mating, the female fishing spider spins a silk sac to carry her eggs. Sometimes she stays to watch the spiderlings (baby spiders) hatch.
Predators: The six spotted fishing spider’s predators include large frogs, fish, and birds.

Fun facts: The spider uses itself as a rowboat to push itself across the surface of the water. To dive, the spider traps a bubble of air in its legs so it can breathe underwater. They can stay underwater for over half an hour.
