Scientific name: Archilochus Description: The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is 3 ½ inches long. The male has a shiny green back, a red throat, a forked tail, and a gray front. The female has a blunt tail. She does not have a red throat, but has similar coloring otherwise. Habitat: flowers, gardens, and around the edges of wooded areas Diet: nectar from flowers and insects Offspring: 2 eggs, laid from March-July Predators: Sharp Shinned Hawk, Praying Mantis, Large Mouth Bass, Green Frogs, Bull Frogs, Big Orb Weaving Spider Fun Facts: Hummingbirds have 1,000 to 1,500 feathers. Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards. There are over 10,000 species of hummingbirds in the world.
